Please see Drums Alive® film clip – The Dot Game |
Print the “Alphabet Game Cards.pdf” on different colored paper (see presentation for directions). Cut out the dots and stick them randomly on the floor. It is best to laminate the Dot Games and secure them with tape on the floor or on the wall before beginning these games.
Follow the directions below:
All the letters of the alphabet lie scattered on the floor – different colored labels – different letters. The idea of the exercise is to tap your foot on each letter in alphabetical order. Each member of the group begins with a different letter of the alphabet.
For example: one begins with A, the next with F, the next with K etc. When they reach Z, they then carry on till they get to their last letter before the one they started with.
Variations:
- Start the alphabetical order with the first letter of your FIRST name.
- Go through the alphabet backwards – starting with Z, or another letter.
- Spell your name(s).
- Spell an instrument – the other members of the group have to read / guess what it is.
Follow the Feet
Formation: Feet scattered
Equipment: Foam Feet that DO NOT slip or move when stepped on. Feet & Circles can be found on the Drums Alive® Basic Tool Box Disk, It is best to laminate the Feet , Hands and Circle Game then secure them with tape on the floor before beginning these games.
Lay the foam feet on the floor with all of the feet facing the same direction without a large distance between each foot (Level 1). Begin by stepping on each foot. It is best to step according to the foot (right or left) being shown on the floor.
When participants are able to maintain balance while stepping from “foot” to “foot” without difficulty then progress to the next level. Place the feet in different directions with a little more distance between them.
Feet & Circles – Rhythmical Stepping Patterns
Place feet in columns a little further than hip distance apart in width and approximately one step apart in length. Modifications may need to be made according to your participants’ ability, agility, fitness, and mental capabilities.
Begin by having participants just stepping correctly on the feet.
Add rhythmical patterns such as: Step Right (ct.1) Step Left (ct.2) Step Right and hold (ct.s 3,4)
Repeat other side and continue until the end of the column.
Alternative: right, right, left / left, left, right foot (Exercise from Triple Jump: “Hop, Step Jump”)
Alternative: How fast can you walk from one end to the other; try and improve this time. When that works well, try and say a rhyme at the same time as you walk.
Number Cards / Memory Game Color
Divide the participants into four groups. Each group has a different color. This game may be played either by giving the groups a desired rhythm or drumming skill. In advanced groups an accompanying choreography is shown.
Possible patterns:
Fuchsia = Front Beats Doubles 4x tempo, (cts. 1,2,3,4). Middle Ball 7x Single Beats double tempo (5,+,6,+,7,+,8)
Add: Choreography = Jump or Bounce (cts. 1,2,3,4). Deep Base Position squat for Single Beats.
Yellow = Right Side Beat 1x (cts. 1, hold 2) Middle Ball Double Beats (cts. 3+4) Repeat Left.
Add: Choreography = Jump to Right side for Side Beat, Jump to middle for Double Beats. (Modification = Step out lunge, Step together). Repeat other side.
Blue = Double Beat 1x, (ct. 1) Overhead Click 1x (ct. 2) DB 1x (ct. 3) Overhead Click fast (cts. 3,+,4). Repeat.
Add: Choreography = Jumping Jack to this rhythm. (Modification = Tap out – in – out – in, Switch sides).
Green = Single Beats (cts. 1,+,2,+,,3,+,4 ), Side Beats Slow lower down towards the floor (cts, 5,6,7,8). Repeat.
Add: Choreography = Base Position and lower to a deep squat and eventually down to Floor Beats.
Each time the teacher holds up the color or number card everyone shows the accompanying drumming and movement skill.
Idea # 2
Once participants have become acquainted with this game allow each group to come up with their own drumming and choreography patterns. Next step is to progress by having each group teach the other group their own creative patterns. Then as above, the teacher holds up the color or number card and everyone shows the accompanying drumming and movement skill created by each group.
