Cultural Drumming

Cultural Drumming is an interpretative celebration designed to reflect the beauty, power, passion and historical influences of movement, music, rhythm and dance on our different cultures around the world. It is an expression of life and insight into the lives of people. Through non-verbal communication, Cultural Drumming promotes a respect, appreciation and understanding of our culturally diverse world.

This portion of your class is a representation of music, dance and rhythms from people around the world. Use the power, passion and energy of a variety of cultures to inspire your choreography both musically and physically. Please see the Drums Alive ® Instructor Series as well as the Kids Beats CDs to give you more ideas for this portion of your classes.

Focus Points:

  • Experience music from around the world.
  • Learn to drum with new or different music, rhythms, beats and meters, which will help capture the feelings and moods of the culture represented.
  • During this section the sky is the limit as far as your choice of music and movement, but it is important to stay within the realm of a safe and effective workout.
  • BPM may vary according to the music and the choreography selected.

Tips:

Teach respect and appreciation for the music and movements of the culture you are representing.

Cultural Drumming Choreography

Music Title: Pate PateCD: Kids Beats Vol. 2DVD: Golden Beats Class Design – Hanka Kühn

Formation/Ball Setup: Military or Circle

Choreography: Steve Seth

Introduction:

This track can be used for both Kids Beats and Golden Beats (standing). Both children and seniors really enjoy it – the seniors especially as it has some ‘Polynesian’ dancing!‘Pate Pate’ is Samoan for ‘log drum’. A log drum is a length of wood (thick tree branch or trunk of a small tree) that has been hollowed out to create a drum. Before Starting:

If you are working with kids or older adults it is probably a good idea to introduce/explain the 3 major movement combinations. We have given them names for ease of instruction:

  • ‘PATE PATE’ – Circle R arm up and around (inner path i.e. move towards center of body first rather than away) – 4 counts; Circle (inner) L arm up and around – 4 counts; Circle (inner) both arms bringing sticks to rest on top of OB – 4 counts; Drum doubles to the rhythm of ‘Pa-te Pa-te’ (4 hits).
  • ‘LOG DRUMS’ – Rumble on OB towards back of ball with hands close together and feet apart. Shake hips in time to rhythm (optional).
  • ‘ISLAND DANCE’ AKA ‘HAWAIIAN DANCE’ – 2 side steps to R, 2 side steps to L; on balls of feet with knees ‘soft’ (bent) and movement coming from the hips. Can add wave-like arm movements.
