Check Equipment
- Use a burst-free ball.
- Ensure proper positioning or placement of the stability balls and the ball holders.
- Place the ball plug downward and readjust throughout the workout.
- Proper height of the stability ball is essential for each individual.
- Ball holders should be a non-skid surface to avoid slipping or sliding out of the correct position. If this occurs, take time to readjust to the proper position.
- Make sure the floor area around the ball (front, side, back) is clear of debris or hindrances.
- Drumsticks are of a hard wood and free of cracks or splinters or broken tips. Have extra drumsticks available.
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CLASS
- Follow the safety rules and recommendation of ACSM and Drums Alive.®
- Integrate the components of a successful Drums Alive® program (see Lesson 19 – Benefits of the Drums Alive Program – Components of a Successful Drums Alive Program)
- Always check and assure safety in your classes (Set up and Safety cues)
- Adapt to your participant level. Remember to teach and adapt to the level of the class and add variations or modifications that are safe for the more advanced participants.
- Review difficult patterns either rhythmically or choreographically before beginning your class.
Add Modifications – non-impact verses impact moves, small ROM patterns versus large ROM. Make the choreography adaptable for everyone of all levels and abilities by adding modifications or options!
Mix and Match – if you find sections of the choreography too difficult or too easy for your participants, you may choose to mix and match the sections!
