Lesson 23: Drums Alive® Class Design

Using rhythm as the source of inspiration to discover a new group fitness experience, Drums Alive® combines all the benefits of a traditional fitness program with the benefits of music and rhythm. The goal of the Drums Alive® program is to foster a healthy balance physically, mentally, emotionally and socially, in a way that makes it adaptable to all populations, whether they are young, old, healthy or physically or mentally challenged. Most of all, Drums Alive® provides an element of fun and creative expression. The basic design for the Drums Alive® program consists of the following:

  • Warm Up
  • Cultural Drumming
  • Power Beats – Cardiovascular Training
  • Drumming Strong
  • Wellness Beats
  • Stretch & Relax

Throughout the Drums Alive® program the music Beats Per Minute (BPM) should be approximately 120 –140. Tempo may increase or decrease depending upon the physical and cognitive level of participants.

Integrate simple rhythms and movements before building complex patterns. Teach the appropriate terminology for the class and follow the guidelines for a group exercise class (i.e., American Council on Exercise) and follow the components for a successful Drums Alive® program.
