Tips for use of voice and cuing

The instructor’s voice may be more effective from the viewpoint of the older adult if:

  • The instructor’s voice may be more effective from the viewpoint of the older adult if it is not too loud – loud sounds can actually be painful to the older adult.
  • Hearing loss usually occurs at higher pitches at first. It may also be a problem of clarity – especially over background noises (as opposed to volume). Keep your voice pitched a little lower (deep).
  • Use your voice to motivate others – to show excitement, drama, and fun – by changing pitch or putting a smile in your voice (by putting a smile on your face).
  • Protect your voice by using diaphragmatic breathing, speaking in lower pitches, and timing your vocal cues by using fewer words and more visual cues.
