Tips for teaching Golden Beats

  • Keep the choreography easy to follow yet challenging enough to keep them on their toes.
  • Use a variety of music styles and don’t play the music TOO LOUD!
  • Avoid using music that does not have a GOOD BEAT. When the beat is lost in the music participants have difficulty following.
  • Use songs that everyone can sing along with.
  • Borrow movements from other cultures and share details with your class.
  • Make the choreography FUN and sometimes even FUNNY!
  • Don’t always drum. Keep a nice balance of movement and drumming. Try putting down the sticks and just clapping or using body rhythms.
  • Avoid too many “Rumbles” or Banging on the Drum for long periods of time.
  • Try using familiar choreography in different ways (such as having participants face one another instead of facing front).
  • Use some of the Rhythmical Ideas found in the Drums Alive Basic Instructor Manual or online course such as “Making Eyes” or “Echo.”
